Rhymes
I think it was Mark Twain who said: “History doesn’t actually repeat itself, but it rhymes a lot.” Below are the words of two men separated by almost sixty years:
Naturally, the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.
~Hermann Göring 4/18/46, at the Nuremburg trials.
Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 in the attacks and prepared for war; liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers. Let me just put this in fairly simple terms: Al Jazeera now broadcasts the words of Senator Durbin to the Mideast, certainly putting our troops in greater danger. No more needs to be said about the motives of liberals.
~Karl Rove 6/22/05

I think it goes more like this: SOME conservatives (neo-cons) saw the savagery of 9/11 in the attacks and said, “Great now we can attack Iraq — AGAIN;” Other conservatives saw the savaagery of 9/11 and said. “We should only attack those who attacked us — leave Iraq out of it [The old guard conservatives]; and the liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to have the victims’ families appear as guests on Oprah with Dr. Phil for a good cry session.
The Libertarians agreed with the old guard conservatives, and oppose the war in Iraq on constitutional grounds — though they are much more conservative than the neo-cons who just want to attack anything that moves.
And the strict biblicists, who aren’t all that impressed with the constitution (on biblical grounds) — agreed with the Liberatarians, but for totally different — biblical — reasons.
And the neo-cons said “WOW. I had no idea this world has more than just mad libs and normal conservatives.”

Thank you for your comment, Ophirs Razor. I agree, of course, that the “two” parties are much more complex than the stereotypes fed to us through the corporate media. Liberals can be just as thoughtful, manipulative, whiny, or stupid as the conservatives. I see the neo-con Karl Roves of our country as manipulators of the worst sort.
