Goldilocks’s Government

Government by itself is not always the problem
by Denise Lang

Government should not be too big. But if it is too small, it can’t protect its citizens from abuses of power. President Theodore Roosevelt said, “The limitation of governmental power means the enslavement of the people by the great corporations.” This is happening now.

The libertarian notion that privatizing services traditionally performed by government is unrealistic. In 1992, Dick Cheney, as defense secretary, spearheaded the movement to privatize most of the military’s civil logistics activities. (more…)

Why Immigrants Imigrate

I think its time to take a closer look at why Mexicans are coming here. I doubt they come because they like it here, but rather because they couldn’t otherwise support their families in Mexico. The reason for that being that NAFTA, IMF, and international agra-business has eliminated traditional farming practices and industries that hire poor people.

For example: Mexico imports corn and tortillas from the US eliminating hundreds of thousands of jobs. The immigrants previously could earn maybe $5 a day when they can earn say $5 an hour here. What would you do in their position? How far would you go to feed yourself and your family?

I don’t think it’s healthy to have this many undocumented people here either, but I do think the change has to be applied at the source of the problem rather than depriving anyone from making a living. This problem was created by corporate america with the greedy support of both parties. This situation needs to be fixed pretty soon now. And Thats Why Immigrants Imigrate!

Race You To Class

Race does not exist! Sorry to spoil your state of privilege, but it does not exist. Biologically, there are greater differences in the DNA among Caucasians than there are between Caucasians, Negroes, or Asians.

If you want to find actual human differences, look at class. This is where the competition lays. Skin color, age, language, gender, and income are just convenient ways to divide and conquer. It’s about money.

In answer to the Libertarian mantra of big government being behind all our problems from racism to bad breath, I think government is less racist than society in general. Not sure about the bad breath.

Tragedy of the Commons Revisited

Almost two years after this was first published there is still no new library in sight. The city of Alamogordo has decided that a new bond would not pass and they are probably right. The small, but noisy group of anti-library, anti-social, anti-tax, Eagle-nuts have almost convinced the rest of us that it is futile to want something that could help the minds , but not the bank accounts, of the noisy ones.

First published here on February 22, 2005
Our City of Alamogordo needs a new library. The old one is bursting at the seams with not enough space for new bookshelves, archives, meeting rooms, and public computers. The Alamogordo Public Library is one of the most used public spaces in the county. Recently, a water line break under the building caused a corner of the building to sink. The foundation, a wall, and several roof structural supports cracked and portions of the library had to be closed off until they could be supported. (more…)

Progressive Taxation: Some Hidden Truths

By George Lakoff and Bruce Budner, AlterNet
Printed on April 16, 2007

At this time of year it seems there are only two things certain in life, taxes and anxiety about taxes. Instead of the perennial talk of a simplified tax form, how about a simplified understanding of the progressive values that underlie our tradition of progressive taxation?

Such an understanding won’t move the tax deadline. But it might eliminate some of the anxiety. Understanding the hidden truths behind progressive taxation might also lead to more coherent — and more just — tax policies.
